The present study performed on a large group of CIS patients demonstrated that regional grey matter atrophy is present right after the first clinical event of multiple sclerosis and mainly affects the deep grey matter.
“This and other studies show that grey matter involvement is there from the start. I use this as argument for aggressive early treatment. It is better to protect the brain, particularly the grey matter, than to compensate for the damage or to try an restore its function in the future. At the moment we have no restorative therapies that have been shown to work.”
