Results of the probiotics survey

“An interesting and clear result. The question is will one of the probiotic manufactures give us, or another research group, £1,000,000 to test probiotics vs. placebo in a proof of concept phase 2a study? Or can we run generate sufficient observational data to help generate some interest in this area? It is becoming increasingly clear that ‘we are what we eat‘ and that the contents of our gut influences our immune systems. The question is how do we manipulate the bacterial contents of our gut and if we do will this have a positive effect on immune-mediated disease such as MS? There is only one way to find out to do a randomised, double-blind, controlled trial; this would be ‘Good Science‘ not ‘Bad Science‘!”

  1. Yes maybe Prof G should contact themBut I think the trial would need to be longer than ther series?

  2. "It is becoming increasingly clear that 'we are what we eat' and that the contents of our gut influences our immune systems."Is this related in any way to the idea of using hookworms to treat MS?

  3. Although the concepts are perhaps similar that gut flora can modify the behaviour of the immune response, the idea of the hookworm experiments is that it generates a T helper two (Th2) immune response that inhibits the Th1 response that some have associated with multiple sclerosis. Th2 responses are anti-worm responses and are associated with an allergic/asthma like response.
