Survey results: nutriceutical use amongst MS’ers

“Almost all MS’ers use supplements, despite a very poor evidence-base. I wonder if all the money spent on putative nutriceuticals went on funding MS research if we would be closer to an MS cure and an effective MS prevention strategy?”

“I wonder how many of you, in the current financial climate, are finding it increasingly difficult to afford supplements?”

  1. I really hope you have not considered Vitamin D research a waste, when you know full well, or should know that there are clinical trials being planned that will test whether this vitamin may possibly prevent MS or decrease relapse activity. Far more patient friendly than anything that big pharma is currently dreaming up!

  2. In how many of the 86% was the neutriceutical vit D3? I think most MSer's who visit this site know they should be taking 5000iu's. It would be interesting to know what were the other most popular neutriceuticals.

  3. Good science, bad science, no science. You will perhaps forgive us MSers who, dismayed by the scarcity of the first and burned by the second, resort to the third to find answers to a difficult situation. I have enormous respect for those trying to find scientifically valid answers to what triggers MS, what causes its progression, and what can treat/cure it. I have little respect for those who claim to have full knowledge when no such thing exists. And yes I use neutraceuticals, including D3 which I have used since before it was on the radar screen of treatment options.

The latter is being tested in several clinical trials at present. Unfortunately, we may have to wait several decades to get data on vD and MS prevention.

I think this may be a great research project for one of our students.
